Dr Philippe Charles Montravers

Paris, France

Dr. Philippe Montravers is Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Bichat-Claude Bernard University Hospital (University de Paris) in Paris, France. He completed his training in Intensive Care and Anaesthesiology before achieving a Ph.D. in Antimicrobial Therapy and Immunology at the University Paris VII and the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) in Paris. He is the author of more than 380 publications and reviews, as well as chapters of books, in the field of anaesthesiology, critical care medicine and infectious disease. His current areas of research include the epidemiology of nosocomial and post-operative infections, antibiotic and antifungal therapies.

Dr Julia Wendon

London, UK

Professor Julia (‘Jules’) Wendon is internationally recognised for her exceptional contributions to the intensive care of patients with severe liver disease. Director of intensive care in 2010, as well as being the Director of R&D for the Trust.

At King’s, she established the Liver Intensive Care Unit to provide high-quality support for the liver failure and transplantation programme. Her commitment to patient care and to training junior colleagues was legendary

Dr Michael Casaer

Brussels, Belgium

Medical Doctor at the KULeuven in 1996. He is a Board-certified anesthesiologist (since 2001) and intensive care specialist (since 2006) after training in the ZOL Genk & University Hospitals Leuven. He worked as an Anesthesiologist–Instructor in the Intensive Care Unit and Operating Theatre for Doctors Without Borders Belgium in St. Marc, Haiti, from 2001 to 2002. Appointed Consultant in the UZLeuven Department of Intensive Care Medicine, with particular responsibility for the Burn Unit, professor Casaer, conducted epidemiological research in Burns awarded with the Prix Martin Ramelot in 2007. He enjoyed a clinical training of 1 month in the highly reputed Burn Center of Dr. Herndon in Galveston, TX USA and obtained the ABA-Advanced Burn Life Support

Dr Giuseppe Citerio

Professor of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the Milano Bicocca University, School of Medicine and Surgery. Director of Anesthesia and Neurosurgical Intensive Care, San Gerardo Hospital, ASST-Monza. Editor in Chief of INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE.

he trained since staff and residents of the Neurosurgical Intensive Care unit that actively participated in national and international networks, such as CenterTBI. Research activities are focused on TBI, subarachnoid hemorrhage, neuroanesthesia, neurointensive care and brain death/organ donation. He has developed more than 50 courses in Italy and Europe on Neurointensive Care topics

Dr Fabio Silvio Taccone

Brussels, Belgium

Fabio S. Taccone is Professor at the Department of Intensive Care of Hopital Erasme and Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Brussels (Belgium). He received his medical degree from the University of Naples, Italy (SUN) in 2000 and obtained post-graduate licenses in Internal Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine at ULB. He obtained in October 2014 his PhD doctoral degree with a thesis on cerebral microcirculation during sepsis. Pr. Taccone has a large area of interest in critical care medicine, with a particular research in antibiotic pharmacokinetics, brain injury, microcirculation during severe infections, therapeutic hypothermia as a neuro-protective strategy and ECMO. He has authored more than 220 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and is Section Editor of Minerva Anestesiologica and BMC Emergency Medicine. He is also Chair of the Neuro-Intensive Care section of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) since 2016.

Dr Daniel DeBacker

The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine proudly awards the Society Medal to Prof Daniel De Backer for his outstanding contribution to both the Society and the specialty over a number of years. Daniel is currently Head of the Intensive Care department of the CHIREC Hospitals (Brussels and Braine l’Alleud-Waterloo) and Professor of Intensive Care at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Brussels).
His main fields of investigation are sepsis, organ dysfunction, and support, circulatory failure, hemodynamic monitoring (including echocardiography), hepato-splanchnic circulation
and microcirculatory disorders.
